Wolf Whistle

90's Magpie

 

It's not very often that I take a set of outfit photos for Wolf Whistle and am really pleased with them but, without wanting to sound all ego here, I love these ones. I felt amazing in this outfit and I hope that shows!

This is down in a big way to my gorgeous 90s dress from ASOS Marketplace vintage store Rag Magpie. And when I say 90s, I MEAN it: it's a flippy grungy floral dress, with that oh-so-90s lace up corset front. It's a little big too big for me but I think don't think it matters too much with this style of dress - and I did lace it as tight as it would go!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I've teamed it with a couple of old pieces - a Primark jumper and a Zara backpack, both bought last year - and my new babies: these ridiculous boots that I bought secondhand for a tenner. They're a size too big - everything is! - but I wear big socks and I stomp around happily. My boyfriend has started calling them my Spice Girls shoes, haha!

There's loads of cheaply priced bits on the Rag Magpie store that I love right now. My current favourites are this gold quilted skirt (!!!), oversized mustard shirt, perfect floral midi and this ridiculous 60s dress.

 

Vicki, the charming seller, also frequently stocks plus sized bits and pieces, which is awesome as it can be really hard to find vintage above a size 14. I'm loving this daisy chain sundress with a 42 inch bust and this great purple and gold shift in a 16/18.

Very (nice) Loafers

 

So I was pleased to be contacted by the nice folks over at Voucher Codes about their new season review campaign for their lifestyle magazine, Most Wanted. This season they are asking a range of fashion bloggers to review high street winter staples - starting with the loafer. These are everywhere at the moment and I love them - I have to admit that I've already bought myself a brown pair from New Look, haha!

I was assigned Very.co.uk and I chose this pair in a shiny black as I suddenly realised that I didn't own a single pair of black flats! (Um... how?) I must admit that my first impression of them wasn't too great: while they looked nice, they really had that plasticky faux patent smell - you know the one? I know you know!

 

I wore them for the first time when I was working at London Fashion Week. Perhaps the best day to break in new shoes is NOT the one when you'll be on your feet for 12+ hours but I have to admit, I was incredibly impressed. Despite feeling a bit stiff at first, the shoes didn't rub or hurt at all! I did wear them with tights but I'm bare legged in them today and am just as comfortable. I think I should note that they do run a tiny bit narrow but not too much, I promise.

And, considering that they were £28, I'm rather impressed with them. The traditional penny loafer styling is spot on and I love the shiny finish. Also - and this might sound weird - it always bothers me with shiny shoes when the natural bends where your toes are look horrid. (Does that make sense?) But these are holding up strong and haven't made those horrid marks along the bend!

  

Most Wanted asked me to rate them on the following lines:

Comfort = 8.5/10
Style = 8/10
Price = 9/10
Stylishness = 8.5/10

Overall: 8.5/10!

Not bad, Very, not bad at all.

A Dozen Dungarees #7

I'm going to be honest with you here, readers: I think that this is my least favourite Dozen Dungarees look so far. Here, have a look:

Is it just too immensly boring? I think my lack of love for this outfit is partly because I'm think I look pretty horrid in these pictures but also because it feels a little too, ah, COSTUMEY. Like I'm going to a party dressed as a cowgirl, right?

I think a pinch of fancy dress makes up a great deal of my outfits and I'm usually totally for it but not here. I just think this one falls a bit flat. But, on the plus side, these white vintage boots I own are amazingly utterly ridiculous!

Double Denim

2011 seems to be the year I let go of a lot of my old fashion rules. It's been the year I started wearing trousers again after almost seven years solid in skirts and dresses... which scared me more than I thought it would, honestly.

It's also been the year I finally decided to give blonde a shot after always being convinced it wouldn't suit me - and, what do you know? It does!

It even appears to be the year I embrace yellow, aka my LEAST favourite colour: I just bought this yellow shirt at New Look this week! (I'm still reeling over this, seriously.)

 

 

I guess double denim is just the latest in a long line of rules to be broken! I've never done it before but it seems easier - aka less horrifying - in grey, doesn't it?

And this vintage cowboy shirt is really perfect: oversized in just the right way, seriously soft and full of cute deails I adore, like star studs on the back and patterned metal collar tips.

 

 

I've teamed it with my new favourite accessories: an oversized clutch (really a clipboard case, haha!) and the perfect suede Chelsea boots, both in my favourite cranberry colour. Finished off with my Gogo Philip silver cross earrings that I've been reaching for a lot recently - sometimes just one, sometimes the pair!

Really excited to finally tell you guys that I've been featured as one of the UK's top bloggers in Company magazine alongside babes Vicki, Lily and Lou Lou. I've been dying to tell you for ages!

 

It looks good, right? It was written from a phone call I had with the journalist so while I would never say "You CAN look chic on the cheap" (urgh), I really am actually this 'haphazard'. And, hands down, the best thing about blogging has been the friends I've made.

It's been a manic week with no time to blog! I've been fitting in press days and bloggers events around a busy week in my new job - and I'm just about to run out to John Lewis for the start of Vogue's Fashions Night Out tonight. I'm wearing a bright blue dress and a bright pink coat so if you see me, say hi!

So: Oh, hi, Jaeger A/W 2011. You're basically a cacophony of stuff what I love. Well done indeed!

In fact, Jaeger is a brand I follow avidly and always look forward to, especially for the women's coats  - and Autumn/Winter 2011 was no different. It's not avant-garde - we're not talking meat dresses here, people - but it's perfect classic pieces and always in a scrumptious palette.  I love those preppy barrel handbags and the oversized clutches in block colours. I love that geranium pink (even more now that I'm a blonde) and those bright blue dresses never fail to make me happy. In fact, so seductive is the styling of these shots that I'm even looking back over the pictures thinking 'mustard, maybe?' and that is the colour I hate most in all the world!

Happy birthday to me...

 

...or, more correctly: happy birthday to Wolf Whistle!

On the 1st of September 2008, I wrote the very first WW post. Three years on this blog has bought me more joy, fulfillment, adventures and - best of all - friendships than I could have ever imagined.

Today has been a big day all round for me as it was also the first day of my new social media and blogging job with Katch PR which I'm naturally very excited about. And, best of all, my step-sister got married last weekend! I was a bridesmaid and the day was incredible. It  feels like a whole week of celebrations for me!

You might remember that last year for the blog birthday I did a whole week of giveaways to celebrate turning two. This year I haven't been so well organised but some fun freebies are belatedly on their way, I promise! There are also some other really exciting things in the pipeline for WW that I can't tell you about yet, even though I'm dying to - but all will be revealed soon.

Thank you all so much for sticking with me and extra special thanks to my  fabulous mum,  pictured with me here, who has been my biggest fan and fiercest supporter all this time.

2011 has been a really hard year for me in a lot of ways and I've not always been able to give WW the time and attention that it deserves. Right now I'm very excited for a new season, a new job and a new year of blogging: it really feels like I'm entering a whole new phase of my life. It's both exciting and terrifying (of course!) but I'm determined to be the best that I can be and make Wolf Whistle the best that it can be, too.
